Ayurveda, being a vast science is divided into eight branches, which are collectively called as Ashtang Ayurveda. Like any other modern medicinal therapies, Ayurveda believes in specialized treatment for different body parts. Thus, the medicinal art have been categorized under branches that deal with psychiatry, internal medicine, treatment of eyes, ears, nose, throat and head, toxicology and gerentorology separately. Ayurveda is the first ever medicine system to categorize pediatrics, aphrodisiacs and surgery as the branches of any medicinal science.
‘Kaya’ means body & ‘Chikitsa’ means treatment. Treating the body by taking medicines internally is kaya chikitsa.

The branch deals with ‘Demonology’. It is popularly known as ‘Mantra -Tantra Chikitsa’

Urdhwang means the body parts above shoulders, i.e. head,neck, throat,eyes,ears which deals with diseases of these organs.

Shalya Chikitsa is treating the patient with surgical procedures. Such as ‘kshar karma, Agni karma, Rakta mokshan.

Daunshtra or Daunsh means Toxicology. The treatment against these toxins is Daunshtra chikitsa.

Jara is old age; The science includes measures to delay ageing signs, treatment of age related diseases and rejuvenation therapies.

It deals with ‘Suprajanan’ i.e. preparation for betterment of conception and problems related to infertility.
